The George Borowski Videos Part One

After a great responce on the George Borowski podcast were publishing the videos that were taken of George Borowski playing some of his tracks in the studio. So here's the first set of tracks starting off with 'Who is Innocent?' the track that John Peel loved and I'm sure was in his festive 50. The second track 'Manchester Boys' was the b-side of that single and was produced by late great producer, Martin Hannett.  You can view the videos below....

Happy Birthday Tina Turner

The singer Tina Turner turns 71 years old today and she's still amazing. I'm trying to rack my brain about what to write about Mrs Turner and all I can think about is the fact that Marc Bolan allegedly played the guitar in the hit 'Nutbush City Limits.' This is backed up by his ex-girlfriend, Norla Jones, who says the T-rex man was in L.A at the time of the recording and he has previously been given writers credit on a couple of Ike and Tina's tracks. If it's true we will never know. Anyway, happy birthday Tina!

YourTube 2 - BluesBeaten Redshaw

Our second Youtube sensation is the great  young blues player, BluesBeaten Redshaw, good to see another northerner into the blues. He's played Glastonbury on the 40th Anniversary and he has recently embarked on a tour from North Yorkshire to Switzerland on his 1948 Ferguson Tractor and he's got some great YouTube clips and also has a cd called 'Growing with the blues' out now. Have a look below..

What! Is he really posting about Dr Who ??!!!??

I know, I know. I should really be posting about rock and roll, guitars etc but man!

It’s the anniversary of the first episode of Dr Who. My favourite Dr was that old man William Hartnell, he was the only Dr to smoke (and obviously smoking is cool) and wore Edwardian clothes (which is also cool).

Joe Strummer Films Are Just Like Busses...

Director Julie Deply
Theres been alot of Clash news recently, with Mick Jones touring the Uk for Hillsborough and Paul Simonon fighting for Greenpeace. Now there is more!

Yes it's been announced that two films are being made about The Clash’s deceased front man, the first being written by Paul Viragh, the writer of the recent Ian Dury Biopic 'Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll'. The second film being more unusual with the ‘2 days in Paris’ and 'Three colours: white' actress, Julie Deply taking control as the films director.

What do Rodney Dangerfield, Tina Weymouth and Karen O have in common?

JFK
What does Talking Heads bassist Weymouth, Singer O and comedian Rodney Dangerfield have in common?

Well I'll tell you, they were all born the same day that JFK died, not the same year but it's close enough so I can group them together and write about them; Right?

The Moons, Elgazelle and The Minx at The Ruby Lounge - Review

The Moon's James Bagshaw
The Moons, Elgazelle and The Minx Reviewed!
I enter The Ruby Lounge late, spending too long talking to my companion Tom in The Castle Hotel, just down the road. The first band has already started playing and their music sounds strangely familiar, I rush down and plonk my camera equipment on the bar, order two cans of red stripe and a John Smiths for Tom.

No Cars - 'Yoko Eat Whales' Album Review

Any band that's willing to have a kazoo solo have me on their side. 'No Cars' are mad, operatic and at times the harmonys are really beautiful.  They sound like Weil/Bretcht's Alabama song on speed; their songs are about loving David Bowie and Sellotape. They are what I wish the 5678's were. As they put it ''all the songs are cute and short.'' At the moment their album isn't out on cd or lp but the download is well worth the 4 quid asking price.

Pick up 'Yoko Eat Whales' here now!

New Track from The Doors!

We'll I didn't think I'd ever type that, but it's not really a new track. It's a never-before-heard song that's being released with the 40th anniversary version of The Doors 'LA Woman.' Everyone loves the doors and the newly unearthed song sounds fantastic! Sadly they haven't release the song online yet and you’re going to have to wait till the release of the reissue in January 2012. But here's a snippet of the song to wet your appetites here.

Welcome Back and Congratulations Vintage Trouble

Vintage Trouble Live
The Blues Hand-me-downs are back!
Award Winning Vintage Trouble!

Sadly I was too busys hosting the live show to go down to (friends of the show) Vintage Trouble's gig at Manchester Club Academy last night. We'd like to extend a welcome to Ty Taylor and the gang back to the Uk for their tour this month which ends with a gig at the Electric Ballroom in Camden.

The end of Sonic Youth?

There are rumours circulating around that Sonic Youth played their last gig at Brazil's SWU Festival on Monday. I've never had the opportunity to see them live or really listened too much of their music.

My two experiences of the band are; hearing a Disk Jockey play an obscure b-side that I loved and can't remember what it really sounds like (i think it might have been a dream). The other being someone once gave me a t-shirt with the ‘Sonic Youth’ logo on.

This rumour seems believable because Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon have announced that they are getting divorced and news of solo projects. I know some of you out there will be crying yourself to sleep after reading this post but I've found the full SWU Festival set on YouTube and I'm going to show them you to cheer you up.

Glastonbury named best festival...But where's Hop Farm?

Hop Farm Festival

Looking at the list of winners at the UK Festival Awards there is one festival that seems to be ignored.

I spent hours sweating over the phone and Internet to get tickets to Glastonbury and failed miserably. So I wondered where to go for my festival fix. After some online searching I found The Hop Farm Festival.

BBC have Cancelled Shooting Stars

We Shouldn't Let it Lie

Just heard it on Twitter from @therealbobmortimer that the BBC has just cancelled one of the strangest and best game shows on television. I can't belive it! They have commissioned a remake of jim'll fix it with Shane Richie and still put on Lee Nelson's blah blah blah. Watch some of the best Shooting Stars moments below and complain the the BBC here. Vic and Bob I'm here for you!

True or False:
Eddie Izzard?

Amy Winehouse and other Rock and Roll Ghosts

GhostWatch with Pete Doherty?
I Look at Other Rock Spirits
The ex-Libertine and soon to be film star Pete Doherty is claiming that his friend Amy Winehouse, who died earlier this year, is trying to contact him from the spirit world. A friend of the singer said "He is utterly convinced that he has seen her ghost. A lot of people will think his visions are probably drug-induced but he claims he is clean." He is so scared he has fled Camden for Paris.

But this isn’t the first ghostly encounter with a rock and roll star, there is a surprisingly high amount of apparitions, spirit and poltergeists that hang around with these guys and girls.

Chicago Soul Electric Blues Funk & Soul Reviewed

The other side of Chess Records.
Is it worth buying another Compilation?

I went drinking in the Northern Quarter on friday night and three pints in I was staring at Piccadilly Records from Dry Bar, I decided to go in and just have a luck round.

One record popped out that was too hard to resist, a compilation album of Chicago Soul, it was in the late sixties and Chess records when they decided to bring their blues artists like Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf  ‘up to date’ by putting them with more psych/soul bands.

Jimmy Reed Anthology Review

Jimmy Reed Anthology Boxset
I don't think Vee-Jay records is going to have to do a hard sell to flog the Jimmy Reed Anthology, I mean you get 54 tracks for £4.99. It's worth the price alone to have 'Big boss man,' 'Bright lights, Big city'  and 'Baby what do you want me to do' in your collection.

Mick Jones wants Justice for Hillsborough

Don't Buy The Sun Concert Goes on Tour!
Mick Jones to play Clash hits.
The Hillsborough disaster was way before my time, but after reading about the way The Sun wrote about the evert I can see why Mick Jones is part of a tour for the Hillsborough Justice Campaign.  Mick Jones is set to play some clash songs on the tour, so it's definatly for clash fans. The ticket prices are a very reasonable £17.50 and the money goes to the Hillsborough charity.

Mick will also be joined by Host John RobbPete Wylie, The Farm and special guests every show.

Black Sabbath are Back!

I've never thought of black Sabbath as metal, they were more than that. A great rock and roll band with a message that got watered down with Ozzy's Tv image and Sabbaths countless later albums. Just forget about the bats, the cocaine, the solo carriers and Dio for a minute and listen.

The Rum Diary Film Review

Today The Rum Diary is released in Uk cinemas, a long awaited return to the screen for both director Bruce Robinson and a novel by Hunter S Thompson.  Free to those that can afford it, very expensive to those that can't; I paid my eight quid to get into the early screening. Sat down in the freezing cold cinema with a bastard behind the eyes.

My New Favourite Band

I love The Ramones and I love Two Wounded Birds. They are playing manchester on the 24th at Troff in Manchester. Sadly i'm recording with my own band that day so I can't go and watch them. But I suggest that you spend some time digging their sounds.

YourTube 1 - Daddy Stovepipe

YOUTUBE CLIPS WE LOVE!
Daddy Stovepipe plays.

This is the first in a bi-weekly post about our favourite Youtube pages and videos, the first Youtuber choosen is the stupidly tallented Blues mulit-instrumentalist DaddyStovepipe. I've been following him for some time (not in a sexual preditor sort of way) and really want to show you some of his stuff, I found him while searching for some ukulele blues lessons.

Lulu- Lou Reed and Metallica album Review

Lou Reed and Metallica played Live on Later... tonight, I'm so impassioned I'm going to post my album review early.

Right! I'm trying to ignore all the bad press on this album. I'm going to just sit back and press play, see what comes into my mind. I love Lou Reed, I really do. I even love his live shows still, I like his dry vocals and even think the out of tune and rhythm singing adds to the music.  I can give or take Metallica and I have horrible memories of when I attempted to be a mosher when I was a kid. The one main problem was that I hated metal...

King Salami and The Cumberland 3 Single Review

GEORGE LOOKS AT THE LASTEST RELEASE!
Will King Salami be a hit?

Imagine a Louis Armstrong doing an impression of Screaming Jay Hawkins covering The Sonics Strychnine with the ventures as his backing band. Thats pretty much what King Salami and the Cumberland 3's new single ''Trubble Trubble'',Which is out on the Dirty Water record label, sounds likes. It's like one of those 'just add water' sea monkey kits, just add a record player and you've got a party.

Talking to Davy Jones and the anniversary of The Monkees giving the public 'Head'

The Monkees Reissue of Head
ANNIVERSARY OF THE MONKEES HEAD!
Looking back and Talking to Singer Davy Jones

43 years ago today the Monkees released their ‘cinematic suicide letter,’ the very unusual ‘’Head.’’ It was defiantly not suitable for the teen audience the Monkees has previously sought, with cameos from Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and Frank Zappa (with cow in tow) and at one point Peter Tork punching a woman, only to find out it was a man in drag.

David Lynch Single Review

FILMMAKER RELEASES SINGLE!
KAREN O PROVIDES THE VOCALS

David Lynch can do everything! He's a great painter! A great photographer! A great screenwriter! He did such an amazing job directing a live show with Duran Duran that It actually persuaded me to love their new album! Now he's gone and done it again with his own record. "Crazy Clown Time" comes out on monday (7th) and it sounds pretty much how his films look; awesome!

Remembering Fred ''Sonic'' Smith

Patti Smith at Hop Farm Festival
LOOKING BACK AT THE MC5 GUITARIST!
What was Fred Smith really like?

The last time i really balled my eyes out, I mean really cried was at The Hop Farm Festival this year. A coming together of some of my childhood heros (Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Morrissey and Patti Smith), it was like the planets aligning to me. It was boiling hot, I was in the centre of the crowd when Patti walked out and I felt my knees go weak. Her cool calm american exterior was fascinating, I was drawn to her every word....but I wasn't blubbering yet.

Pin-Up Bowling Rock 50s Style All-Dayer Review

Loverly Black Cadillac at Pin-Up Bowling
Rock and Roll and Classic Car All-Dayer is a Hit!
George also talks to band Rocket 88 Trio!

Hello one and all, as the fantastic Comedy show 'Slaughter House Live' was canceled on Sunday I decided to venture down to the Pin-Up bowling alley to play a game, see some cool cars and listen to some music. It didn't disappoint, We here at GDTKC were transported back in time into a sea of quiffs, smog of Lucky Strike and that Thick acoustic bass thumpin' sound.
